Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles are the most common type of roofing material in the United States. They’re durable and low-cost, which makes them a great option for many homeowners.
Asphalt shingles come in several different varieties and styles: architectural, dimensional, laminated, and others. They can be installed on roofs that are steep or flat, curved or gabled.
There are three main types of asphalt shingles:
3-Tab Asphalt Shingles
These are a type of asphalt shingle that features three tabs, or pieces of paper, that are embedded in the shingle. These tabs are what give the shingles their strength. The tabs are made of asphalt and can be found on the bottom and on both sides of the shingle.

Architectural/Dimensional Shingles
Architectural shingles, also known as dimensional or laminated shingles, consist of multiple material layers of a more refined type of asphalt than 3-tab. They are a thicker, more durable shingle.
Unlike 3-tab shingles, architectural shingles contain no cutouts, but the lower half is laminated with an extra layer of asphalt. This produces a dimensional and sleek look that gives the shingles their name. The layers are bonded with asphalt sealant, improving the waterproof capabilities of the shingles.
Architectural shingles are popular due to their added thickness and durability and overall more modern style options, providing an attractive three-dimensional look to your roof, mimicking the appearance of natural wood shake or slate shingles.

Luxury/Premium Shingles
Luxury shingles, also known as premium or designer shingles, are a high-end type of asphalt roofing shingle that offers enhanced durability, aesthetic appeal, and performance compared to traditional shingles. They are designed to mimic the appearance of more expensive roofing materials like natural slate or cedar shakes, offering an upscale look without the high cost and maintenance.
Luxury shingles are typically thicker and heavier than standard asphalt shingles, offering greater resistance to hail, high winds, and other harsh weather conditions. Luxury shingles can last longer than architectural shingles, with some potentially reaching a lifespan of 50 years or even more.
